Joe Pickett--game warden, conscientious dad, and general defender of justice in tiny Saddlestring, Wyoming--returns through the steady voice of David Chandler. Chandler's workmanlike, subtly embellished narration is suitable for Pickett's unflappable persistence as he investigates a mysterious drone that is chasing herds of elk and deer until they drop dead of exhaustion. Pickett partners with the female game warden in the next county, and Chandler gives her a slightly feminine voice while staying true to her no-nonsense personality. Together, they discover deeper trouble when they realize that the destructive drone is connected to a lethal group of villains who are hunting for a man in the Federal Witness Protection Program. Chandler's consistent delivery allows the plot to simmer before coming to a boil.

Novelist Benet Archdale and housemaid Carol Stratford are two young, single parents who have no reason to know each other. They become tangled in a nightmarish spiral of kidnap, fraud, family violence and death. Ruth Rendell creates psychological suspense in thrillers that are compulsively readable or, in this case, listenable. British actress Imelda Staunton's reading is perfectly paced, and the characters are well defined. You'll have a hard time turning it off.

Barbara Rosenblat's reading fully measures up to the tale. She is a master of timing and nuance. Rosenblat's power for character interpretation has grown with each book in this amusing series. This is the best one yet.
