BIG GIRLS DON'T CRY

This audiobook is an example of a perfect match: Connie Briscoe's prose and Robin Miles's performance complement each other effortlessly. Naomi Jefferson is the main character whose life is traced in detail through the novel. Thanks to author and reader, the listener gets to know the Jefferson family so well that the loss of Naomi's older brother makes an enormous impact. Naomi takes up her brother's fight for civil rights with varying results. The persistence Naomi shows, as well as her frustration and anger, puts an honest face on the difficult quest for respect and equality. Miles brings the dialogue to life and yet lets the book tell the story. Some scenes are drawn out or predictable, but the overall result is an enjoyable listen.

      18mm BLUES

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
