Barbara McCulloh reads this upbeat novel in a lively voice. The ladies of the title range in age and social status from college student to society matron. While her voice sometimes borders on being chirpy during long narrative stretches, McCulloh creates distinct personalities for a large cast of characters. Filled with believable dialogue and well-crafted description, this novel is an enjoyable story of how a group of women join together to form a successful investment club and ultimately become the backbone of their town's economy. The story of the Larksdale Ladies Investment Club and the personal adventures of its members creates a charming picture of female friendship.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
