Narrator Lorelei King works well with the subtly snarky style of author Darynda Jones. Sunshine Vicram has come home to Del Sol, New Mexico, with her 15-year-old daughter, Auri, to take over as sheriff. When a classmate of Auri’s is kidnapped, King keeps the tension high as a search is undertaken. The story alternates between Sunshine’s and Auri’s points of view, and listeners can easily distinguish between the lighter tone King gives Auri and her more mature one for Sunshine. When Sunshine is brought back in contact with Levi Ravinder, the local bad boy, one can picture Levi’s tough nature through King’s gravelly delivery. Novelist Benet Archdale and housemaid Carol Stratford are two young, single parents who have no reason to know each other. They become tangled in a nightmarish spiral of kidnap, fraud, family violence and death. Ruth Rendell creates psychological suspense in thrillers that are compulsively readable or, in this case, listenable. British actress Imelda Staunton's reading is perfectly paced, and the characters are well defined. You'll have a hard time turning it off.

Barbara Rosenblat's reading fully measures up to the tale. She is a master of timing and nuance. Rosenblat's power for character interpretation has grown with each book in this amusing series. This is the best one yet.
