NEW YORKER stories are notorious for being about rich, sad people to whom nothing happens. This collection shows just how mistaken that prejudice can be. Woody Allen, John Cheever, E.B. White, Nabokov and Thurber are all beautifully represented, along with equally stunning works by those of lesser reputations. Yes, there’s anomie, a sense of loss. Because the collection seeks to highlight thousands of works, it’s, of necessity, all over the map. There are dull precincts here, but there is also a whore and a hand gun. Readings by a variety of actors are always good, and often superb.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
