This cute book is a contemporary tale of a divorced mom with a teenager who moves out of New York City to the supposedly safer suburbs. Much of its success has to do with C.J. Critt’s perky narration. She has a handle on the subject and gleefully jumps right in. Although she goes a bit overboard in the beginning, she settles down by Tape Two and delivers a wonderful, tongue-in-cheek performance. She pushes the story along with understated characterizations and captures every twist and turn with deft reading. The best part, though, is that Critt is obviously having fun, and that fun is infectious.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
