Trying to stave off the dark forces of the universe is nothing new for Kit and Nita, or the senior wizards who mentor them, but this latest threat seems to be neutralizing the wizards' power as it moves in. Before tackling the eighth in the wizard series, listeners might want to listen to at least one earlier book. Christina Moore brings her usual focus and intensity to her narration. Many of the characters return with their familiar voices, with a number of new characters to round out the mix. Moore draws out the drama of the plot and the humor, as well as the close friendship and sense of common purpose between the young wizards.

Miles exquisitely delivers Marisol's Caribbean accent, while Turpin channels Genevieve's frustrations with her family and her own health. Simply magical.

This dark science-fiction story about three teens who participate in a doomed space mission is commendably narrated by Casey Holloway. Varied accents for the three teens—who are from France, Japan, and Norway—and strong pacing showcase Holloway’s talent as a narrator. As panic sets in among the astronauts and the teens find their adult companions to be unreliable, Holloway easily delivers the rising tension, and her quiet intensity draws listeners toward the story’s chilling conclusion. Harstad’s story will leave listeners contemplating the fate of humanity in the vast reaches of space.
