Narrator Sneha Mathan uses subtle tones and a soft voice to take listeners into the emotional world of the protagonist, who is trying to make sense of life without her twin. Mathan capably moves from the character of a young girl to those of older women in the village, realistically portraying each one. Mathan’s changes in pace and pitch demonstrate her control of prose made up of meandering, detailed sentences. Without her careful, deliberate pronunciation, the listener could get tangled up in the many lengthy descriptions. The story is told with a poetic undercurrent of emotion, and the listener will be moved.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
