A series of humiliations finally leads 15-year-old morbidly obese Ever Davies to gastric bypass surgery. Elizabeth Morton’s precise and even narration doesn’t call attention to itself. Her style of delivery is appropriate for a story about a girl who desperately avoids attention. While Morton gives little indication of the Texas setting in her vocal characterizations, she imbues Ever’s best friend, stepsister, and other characters with personality and gives listeners insights into the ways Ever misreads people and continually defeats herself. Complicating Ever’s development is Skinny, a nasty voice inside her head that she believes tells her everything other people won’t say. An absorbing and timely exploration of obesity, its consequences, and how one girl manages finds her voice.

Listeners follow Merry, the longbow girl, one of the best archers in her town. When she finds a magical portal in the forest that takes her back to sixteenth-century Wales, she must use her skills to win an archery contest in order to help her ancestors keep their land. While narrator Emily Wilden brings protagonist Merry to life with a rich Welsh accent, her narration seems uneven at times. All the period characters have accents that reflect the setting of the story and transport listeners to Wales. Listeners who enjoy historical fiction and a bit of fantasy will be charmed by this tale of determination, hope, and family.

This story should be particularly alluring to adolescent girls although the fast-paced action and the nautical setting will also appeal to male listeners. Ages 12-adult.
