PORCH LIGHTS

Robin Miles takes on a soothing Southern lilt as she narrates this story of familial bonds. After the death of her husband, Jackie McMullen puts aside her apprehension at being with her mother and returns to her childhood home with her 10-year-old son, Charlie. There, Annie Britt does her best to let her daughter make her own decisions, even when Charlie is reluctant to return to New York City. Though Miles’s leisurely pace captures aspects of laid-back island living, her voice lacks modulation at times, making it difficult to discern between the voices of mother and daughter. However, her renditions of Annie’s spirited exchanges with her friends and her husband are humorous and entertaining.

      18mm BLUES

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
