The premise of Eileen Favorite's first novel is intriguing: heroines from some of the great works of literature take breaks from their books and enjoy some R&R at a bed-and-breakfast. After establishing this, however, the book has a hard time deciding what it wants to be. In turn, it displays aspects of a juvenile adventure, a fantasy, a bodice-ripper, and a psychological thriller, with no genre ultimately dominating. Narrator Charlotte Parry's difficulties handling the text may stem from this confusion. She presents the voice of the first-person narrator, a 13-year-old girl, well enough. But the other characters, from Scarlett O'Hara to an Irish warlord, and everyone in between, offer a challenge that Parry's range of accents and dramatic ability fail to meet convincingly.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
