As the little family soldiers through the Civil Rights Movement of 1960s Mississippi, Diana learns more from her mother and their Negro caregiver than most children learn in more traditional homes. Berg's narration of her own work captures the sweetness and loss portrayed in this story. Without sounding maudlin, she conveys Diana's frustration at being both poor and a teenager. Berg also illuminates the dignity of Paige and her poverty-stricken friends, black and white. Berg's stunning Ebonic speech for the book's black characters puts the crowning touch on a polished performance.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
