Dickey takes the sad reality of today's plunging economy and growing unemployment to follow one man, Demytryk Knight, and his drastic change of fortunes. However, the story quickly descends into melodrama as Demytryk and his wife turn to robbing banks. Narrator Dion Graham's steady presentation keeps things from turning into a complete farce. Graham delivers the diverse characters, accents, and gamut of emotion splendidly. The thieves graduate from robbing banks to a mega-church and then to betraying, robbing, and killing one another. No character is likable, and that makes the story difficult to engage with. The only possible benefit is a detailed account of how to carry out a robbery.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
