Narrator Kurt Kanazawa nimbly delivers the melodic Hawaiian words and names that are central to this police procedural. Detective Kawika Wong leads the hunt for a serial killer who leaves victims in a beautiful Honolulu park. Wong has a gut feeling that the case isn't what it seems. Kanazawa's voice sounds a bit youthful for the veteran officer, but he does well delivering the island dialect and the descriptions of local life. Many of the subplots are centered on female characters, and Kanazawa provides distinct voices for some of them. A persistent reporter, Zoe Akona, dogs Kawika for answers about a former murder case that might have connections to current events and about his hopes to be named chief of police.

Lisa Flanagan’s talented narration brings ex-detective Vinnie Taylor alive as she settles in a small town in Maryland and tries to rebuild her life. When a routine shopping trip ends in Vinnie receiving a call for help from a teen who believes her best friend has been murdered, Vinnie soon finds herself embroiled in secrets and lies, along with a past she can’t forget. In Vinnie, Flanagan creates a strong, likable character, and she also creates a thoroughly believable cast of supporting characters, including troubled teenagers. Flanagan injects the perfect amount of urgency in her narration, allowing the tension to build as the plot twists to its exciting conclusion.
