A veteran of Wall Street, Erin Duffy knows her stuff and provides a credible view of the workplace for women in the world of investment finance. Alex, fresh out of college, has always dreamed of life as a bond trader. When she snags a job with a prestigious brokerage firm, she runs smack into the rampant sexism of its “boys’ club” mentality. Narrator Robin Gwynne’s voice is youthful, and as Alex and her friends, she’s right on target. However, her male voices lean heavily on stereotype and are unconvincing. Gwynne gives a perky, upbeat performance of the indomitable Alex, but since Duffy focuses more on interpersonal relationships than on the machinations of money, the book becomes more chick-lit than financial thriller.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
