by Ellen Oh ; Read by Jeff Ebner ‧ RELEASE DATE: Jan. 22, 2025
Narrator Jeff Ebner's youthful voice and careful pacing are well suited to this middle-grade horror audiobook. Rory has avoided the house next door ever since he and his best friend encountered the malevolent spirits that eventually caused his friend's family to move away. So when Jack's family moves in, Rory will do whatever it takes to protect them, especially Jack's little sister. Beyond the supernatural encounters, Ebner keeps listeners grounded when Rory and Jack share aspects of their Japanese and Korean cultures, especially foods. Ebner smoothly differentiates characters as Rory and Jack, along with a couple of friendly ghosts, work together to figure out what kind of creatures lurk in Jack's basement and how they can fight back.

by Meg Medina ; illustrated by Anna Balbusso & Elena Balbusso ; Read by Elena Rey ‧ RELEASE DATE: Jan. 22, 2025
Elena Rey builds sympathy for two characters with an unlikely alliance in this fantasy. She captures the feelings of Graciela Lima, a 12-year-old who is swept into the sea and awakens as a sea spirit a hundred years later. Rey's narration builds the details of this complex undersea realm--complete with creatures of all kinds and purposes. Rey also portrays the blacksmith's son, Jorge Leon, contrasting his tenderheartedness with his parents' abusiveness. When Jorge discovers an ancient harpoon that was fashioned by his great-grandfather to kill a sea spirit, Graciela and Jorge unite to fight a band of evil sea spirits. The drama is heightened by Rey's portrayal of their cruelty. She balances the story's tension, the characters' high emotions, and the intricate world-building.
