Jefferson, a young black man is unjustly accused of murdering a white man in a small Louisiana town in the 1940’s. Grant Wiggins, the local black teacher, is convinced by Jefferson’s aunt to share his learning and humanity with Jefferson before the death sentence is carried out. Jay Long gives a firm, though not brilliant reading of the powerful tale, thanks to his rendering of Southern voices, rich and poor, male and female, black and white. This skill gives the dialogue a liveliness and passion that is missing from the surprisingly flat and uninflected narrative. The production is well-done and extremely compelling.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
