This novel by Sigmund Freud's great granddaughter has been adapted for the big screen (one of its stars is TITANIC'S Kate Winslet), but this delicate story may be better suited to the audio format. Set in Marrakesh in the late 1960s, it's the story of two young sisters who must deal with--or, to put it another way, tame--their rambunctious, flighty mother. Freud narrates the story in a crisp, clear voice; her gentle British accent is ideally suited to this somewhat meandering exploration of the troubles of childhood. The audiobook suffers from perhaps a few too many slow spots, but patient listeners will be rewarded with an entertaining few hours.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
