This well-told tale of love and courage during WWII would make a good miniseries.

This story of love, endurance, and heroism in a time of war translates well to audio. That it’s a true story makes it all the better. Reed Peggram was an American linguist who found love when he went to Europe for advanced study prior to WWII. He refused to return to the U.S. because his male partner couldn’t emigrate. They ended up in a Nazi prison camp. Russell Jordan offers a solid narration. His even voice carries the narrative along effectively without false drama. His facility with foreign names and places keeps things flowing. Nicole Cash narrates the touching and enlightening preface, in itself a worthy story of diligence and serendipity.

This well-told tale of love and courage during WWII would make a good miniseries.

    1932

FDR, HOOVER, AND THE DAWN OF A NEW AMERICA

Listeners will be curious to compare the historic 1932 election year with our own--though the issues and the candidates were very different. Franklin Roosevelt, the patrician New York governor, roundly defeated Herbert Hoover, a competent technocrat who was oddly out of touch with his constituents. David Stifel brings both men and their era to life with the authoritative baritone of a news anchor. The election, set against the backdrop of the Great Depression, the early years of the Dust Bowl migration, and Prohibition, would prove momentous, as many Americans voted for a president they hoped could help them dig out of unemployment, debt, and despair. The author's ability to portray individuals while recounting the larger political and social upheavals of that period is impressive and makes for an absorbing narrative.

LIFE STORIES AND LESSONS FROM THE SAY HEY KID

Willie Mays's baseball life was a long and rich one, worthy of multiple biographies. Known as a five-tool player--he could run, field, throw, hit, and hit for power--Mays enjoyed a long career. The tag-team narration here fits wonderfully: Larry Herron speaks in a serious and deep tone that is commanding, with appropriate doses of emotion. Julian McWilliams uses a higher voice for Mays who, in fact, does have a slightly high voice. Often, when people are quoted--like President Obama--imitations are used and fit seamlessly within the story. Off- and on-the-field anecdotes are interspersed with brief pieces of advice and mini-mantras from the baseball great.
