A cat arrives on Samuel's doorstep on New Year's Day, sparking a series of events that leads the lonely linguistics professor to venture outside his books and routine. Aiello's narration starts out uninflected, a style that works well for Samuel's early musings on the cat's appearance. As Samuel grows emotionally, Aiello's inflection changes. The author dramatizes the phenomenon in which "a small act of kindness sets off a chain of events that come around again in the form of multiplied love." The narration, which supports the sweet story rather than outshining it, allows the listener to ponder these events.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
