by Harry Beckwith ; read by L.J. Ganser ‧ RELEASE DATE: Jan. 26, 2011
This think piece for consumers and marketers will remind listeners of works by Malcolm Gladwell and others that fascinate us with insights about human perception and decision making. L.J. Ganser’s seamless performance is so appealing that I can’t imagine anyone enjoying the print version of this title nearly as much. With his vocal presence and understated charm, Ganser adds personality yet never competes with the writing, which is cleverly paced and has a unique character. Beckwith’s examples from popular culture are fascinating. They show how opinions and decisions of all kinds can be dramatically swayed by our preferences for optimism, familiarity, simplicity, underdogs, togetherness, individualism, and captivating narratives. With accessible reasoning and many useful insights, this audio will please a wide range of listeners.

The readers can't compensate for the unbearably pompous prose style of this extended parable about corporate politics and strategy.

This audiobook deals with everything from the historic investments that led to world-dominating companies, such as the Chinese technology company Tencent, to predicting the products and services of the future. An audiobook of such complexity requires a narrator who can handle the task, and David Thorpe manages it admirably. Thorpe uses his masterly voice, which sits somewhere between that of a BBC World Service presenter and an easy, relaxed Home Counties accent, to guide listeners through a sea of numbers, acronyms, and terms such as YP, RPS, and market cap. Rather than simply reading, Thorpe presents the work with excitement and enthusiasm, and this enjoyment transfers to the listener.
