With exquisite sensitivity, narrator Nancy Peterson channels the complex character of Susannah Martin, one of 14 women hanged for witchcraft during the infamous Salem witch trials. Susannah waits for months in abysmal conditions for her execution, repeatedly playing back memories of her long-ago courtship with her handsome beau. Peterson's depictions of both Susannahs--the young, unwed girl and the elderly, world-weary widow--are picture-perfect, and her ability to seamlessly shift between the two is extraordinary. The youthful Susannah speaks sweetly and clearly, although the steeliness of her character is plainly evident. In contrast, the widow Susannah is achingly poignant, filled with rage, grief, and piercing compassion. Supporting characters are skillfully portrayed as well, but it is Susannah's strength and grace that truly make this audio shine.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
