Writer/narrator Heather McGhee, current chair of Color of Change's board and former president of the nonpartisan think tank Demos, engagingly explains how racism damages all Americans. Her expertise as a researcher and author of economic legislation is combined with reports from her personal tour of the U.S. She interviews other experts and ordinary people to expose the fallacy of our nation's capitalist tenet that if others were treated equitably, it would harm those who already are. While not a professional narrator, McGhee is a fine public speaker. Her voice appropriately expresses smiles or indignation as passages suggest. This audiobook is an excellent way to discover and attend to her important work.

British archeologist Pitts proves a compelling narrator for his solidly researched history of Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island. Conventional wisdom sees the ruin of Rapa Nui as a case of ecological collapse, its limited resources squandered on erecting hundreds of giant stone heads. In a steady, subdued voice, Pitts tracks another history. Rapa Nui was first visited by westerners in 1722, and the inhabitants suffered the fate of many native peoples: slave raids, novel diseases, and cultural erasure by missionaries. One by one, Pitt demolishes the various conjectures Rapa Nui has since inspired while building solid evidence for another, more plausible narrative with a very different message to impart.

NoiseCat's witty and erudite pieces on the mythology of Coyote, his unflinching accounts of the horrors of Canadian boarding schools, and his descriptions of the features of contemporary tribes in North America do the listener a real service. He also tells his own family's story: His father, a noted wood-carver, was found in an incinerator; his grandfather was the progenitor of dozens of offspring, and his own remarkable career as co-director of a Sundance Award-winning film and an accomplished powwow dancer adds to the wide-angle story.
