Michaels is an investigator whose senses of observation were sharply honed from her experience of being blind during the first 20 years of her life. She is drawn into an investigation of murders taking place at the school where she spent her formative years. Romance fans will find the scenes between Kendra and her sometimes partner, Adam Lynch, scintillating, while suspense fans may roll their eyes. The twists and turns and the introduction of a dog named Harley will keep listeners hanging on to the end.

Novelist Benet Archdale and housemaid Carol Stratford are two young, single parents who have no reason to know each other. They become tangled in a nightmarish spiral of kidnap, fraud, family violence and death. Ruth Rendell creates psychological suspense in thrillers that are compulsively readable or, in this case, listenable. British actress Imelda Staunton's reading is perfectly paced, and the characters are well defined. You'll have a hard time turning it off.

This is the best one yet.
