You can count on the author of BEACHES and SHOW BUSINESS KILLS for literate, funny dialogue AND heart-ripping sentiment, plus a dollop of Hollywood insider-info. This book may lean a little heavily on the sentiment, but because its principals are TV sitcom writers, there's plenty to chuckle at, too. Reader Susie Breck does a wonderful job in a warm voice that takes no getting used to. She displays just enough empathy and sensitivity in the narrative passages and delineates the characters well. She also succeeds in a delicate task--the portrayal of a physically challenged main character who is described as slow of speech and difficult to understand.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
