OVERKILL

ALI REYNOLDS, BOOK 18

Ali Reynolds takes a call from Clarice, her husband's ex-wife. Clarice's husband is dead, and she is accused of his murder, but she doesn't remember doing it. Narrator Karen Ziemba ably performs this whodunit. Ali uses her artificial intelligence bot, Frigg, for the investigation. Ziemba gives the bot an upbeat, eager-to-please voice that fits Frigg's persona. She sometimes mishandles the idioms in the English language like "being trained" for "being railroaded" or "Mother's the word" for "mum's the word." Ziemba's presentation of the criminal perpetrators is skillful, but her standout performance is Frigg. Overall, Ziemba's presentation weaves the elements of the plot together and provides comic relief. Fans will be delighted.

    STORIES FROM JOE PICKETT COUNTRY

C.J. Box writes about life in wild Wyoming, short stories of people living a rugged life by choice or by circumstance. David Chandler narrates in a rough-edged whiskey voice that suggests summer heat, bitter winters, and windswept prairies, guiding the listener through 10 adventures of men like Fish and Game Officer Joe Pickett. Chandler brings the listener into this strange world where, more often than not, men have to create their own justice. His performance of the economical stories, some rarely seen, is perfect. The tale of the frozen body of a Native American basketball player turned speed freak, her arm reaching through the ice of a lake in a final jump shot, is one of the most fascinating in the collection.

Narrator Susan Ericksen returns for the latest installment of the long-running In Death series, set in New York in the 2060s. Lt. Eve Dallas and her billionaire husband, Roarke, are called to the scene of a murder. Nathan Barrister is found dead in his study, where there is a hidden vault that houses priceless stolen artwork. Dallas’ investigation is complicated by the fact that the only item missing from the vault is a set of jewels stolen by Roarke decades ago. Ericksen masterfully conveys Eve’s emotions, from her frustration about the investigation to her concern for her husband. And Ericksen’s adept handling of the cast of characters, including Dallas’ partner, Peabody; her commander, Whitney; and the victim’s family demonstrates her skill.

      A compelling performance.
