A quintet of talented narrators performs the epic beginning to a sci-fi series simmering with political intrigue. Although General Keith Brennan prefers fighting to talking, he's called to investigate the assassination of the solar system's president. The system is on the brink of all-out war, and Brennan might be the only one keeping it from kicking off. Dion Graham dynamically portrays Brennan, capturing his depth of character; he's a rigid military officer who is awkward in social situations. All the narrators bring uniqueness to their sections, with Zeller being a standout for her clarity and engaging pacing. A vibrant cast of voices complements a stellar start to this series.

Horror in the form of an alien invasion and a bug infestation is compelling and dramatic in this audiobook, and Max Meyers does an excellent job of narrating without overdoing it. Their tone and pacing allow the suspense to build naturally, even during frequent scenes of horror. Their voices are appropriately differentiated as they deliver dialogue and action, and they navigate the complex issues of identity, transformation, and survival with finesse. Crane, the protagonist, chooses to use an alien invasion as an opportunity to transition to male gender, but when he gets pregnant, his situation is threatened. This new audiobook by award-winning author Andrew Joseph White brings its characters to life.

Zara Ramm narrates this space opera, which has two very different primary characters. Faven Sythe is a crystborn, a species that is a blend of alien tech and a human. She has special powers as a navigator. Bitter Amandine is a pirate extraordinaire. Faven seeks Amandine's help when her mentor goes missing. A prison break later, they're on their way, and a deep conspiracy unfolds. Ramm conveys the tension and attraction between Faven and Amandine. As Faven shows Amandine how she navigates a path through the stars, Ramm captures Amadine's awestruck reaction, as well as her shock at the price a navigator must pay. Amadine's crew are a bunch of misfits, and Ramm distinguishes them well.
