An old story--two women exchanging lives for a month--has suddenly caught fire this year, in fiction and film, and is here superbly ignited by the incomparable Rosalyn Landor. She develops the two main characters into believable, full-bodied women: Amber, the discontented, wealthy Connecticut suburban wife and mother, and Vicky, the British magazine editor who craves love and a mate. Green takes a long time to develop her plot, but Landor keeps the pace going. Her vocal characterizations easily travel "across the Pond," from those of the soft-spoken American wife and mom to the sometimes brittle and authoritative English career woman. The outcome is no surprise--the swappers discover that the grass isn't always greener on the other side.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
