Jeffrey Deaver constructs a taut thriller with an unusual protagonist. Renowned criminalist Lincoln Rhyme was paralyzed in an accident but still matches wits with a clever, elusive killer. Joe Mantegna is in top form and takes listeners on a compelling chase. The pace is relentless and Mantegna drives home the full sense of urgency and intrigue. He handles Amelia Sachs, Rhyme's protégé, with sharp intensity and makes her telephonic communications with Rhyme believable. There's plenty of high-tech gadgetry and forensic detail, coupled with deft characterizations and psychological profiling. Mantegna and Deaver just won't let you turn this audiobook off.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
