by Jennifer J. Chow ; Read by Catherine Ho ‧ RELEASE DATE: Jan. 22, 2025
Felicity Jin is a baker with the power to provide meaningful advice for customers of her fortune cookies because she truly can predict the future. Catherine Ho's portrayal of Felicity is enjoyable although, at times, her character voices become a little jumbled. When Felicity and her buddy, Kelvin, find a body under the dessert table at a wedding they catered, Kelvin falls under suspicion, and Felicity sets out to investigate. When another poisoning occurs, complicated by the appearance of Felicity's estranged father, she discovers that her predictive powers have gone cold. With all this going on, there are a few moments when Ho seems to lose track of who is speaking. Although the story is strong in some ways, it's a challenge to listen all the way through.

Vera Wong is back, bringing with her characters from Sutanto's previous audiobook, along with a host of new suspects and friends. Narrator Eunice Wong turns in another stellar performance, ensuring that this second audiobook featuring the 60-year-old Chinese mother and self-styled super sleuth is just as entertaining and thought-provoking as the first. This time, Vera gets herself involved with the seamy underside of social media influencers while trying to solve what police think is a suicide. Of course, Vera knows better, and, of course, trouble ensues. Eunice Wong's attention to pitch and pacing perfectly re-creates the voices of Vera's original community while fashioning a new set of personalities, young and old, for this darker second "case" in what--if we're lucky--is a new series.
