Upon the murder of a local miscreant, the police arrest a fellow deadbeat, but the man's young son, the village newspaper boy, hires Beryl and Edwina to prove his father's innocence. In her performance, Rosenblat ingeniously shifts among the staid, proper Edwina, the adventurously flamboyant Beryl, and the many residents of Walmsly Parva. In addition to depicting the personalities of each character, Rosenblat clearly communicates their social statuses. This audiobook is tremendously enhanced by Rosenblat's narration.

Novelist Benet Archdale and housemaid Carol Stratford are two young, single parents who have no reason to know each other. They become tangled in a nightmarish spiral of kidnap, fraud, family violence and death. Ruth Rendell creates psychological suspense in thrillers that are compulsively readable or, in this case, listenable. British actress Imelda Staunton's reading is perfectly paced, and the characters are well defined. You'll have a hard time turning it off.

This is the best one yet.
