by John Cassidy ; Read by Nathaniel Priestly ‧ RELEASE DATE: Jan. 22, 2025
This audiobook takes a sideways look at the history of capitalism by profiling some of its critics from the dawn of the Industrial Revolution to today's digital revolution. Some names and movements will be familiar, such as Karl Marx, John Maynard Keynes, and the English Luddites. Many others are less widely known. Nathaniel Priestly narrates the work in a steady professional tone. The author is a journalist and generally uses declarative sentences. Given the complicated and detailed text, Priestly slows his pace slightly to allow listeners to better absorb the material. But his tone is never pedantic. He uses strategic pauses to break up long passages. The most surprising aspect of this discussion is how several critiques from long ago remain vitally relevant today.

The readers can't compensate for the unbearably pompous prose style of this extended parable about corporate politics and strategy.

by Barry Diller ; Read by Barry Diller ‧ RELEASE DATE: Jan. 22, 2025
Media powerhouse Barry Diller, at 83, offers an articulate, humble, and utterly honest account of his varied life. Dillard's narration is workmanlike, moving the narrative forward in a somewhat monotonous manner. That unvaried tone sharply contrasts with the fascinating story of a young, not very aggressive personality who nonetheless became highly influential in the entertainment industry. It's all presented without much fanfare: the Paramount years, QVC, and HSN leadership roles, among others. Diller attributes his own cowardice and the societal norms of the 1950s and 1960s for staying silent on his homosexuality. He discusses the matter briefly, along with his successful marriage to fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg. His greatest assets were flexibility and good luck. This is a fascinating life story that requires patient listening.
