SPARRING PARTNERS

Three excellent narrators—Jeff Daniels, Ethan Hawke, and January LaVoy—make this audiobook’s three novellas engrossing. Daniels's low-key, sometimes gravelly, performance in "Homecoming" is perfect for this story about a mostly struggling Mississippi lawyer who assists a friend who stole some money and disappeared, but who now wants to return. Hawke’s work with voices is particularly good in "Strawberry Moon," the story of a death row inmate who is facing his final hours and fading hopes. LaVoy narrates "Sparring Partners," a story of family dysfunction and a law firm in trouble. LaVoy carries the dialogue and narrative portions with the right amount of drama and verve, and is great with both male and female voices. A highly entertaining listen. Nankani delivers an expressive performance that emphasizes Simi's conflict between her passion for Jack and the mission. Her distinct character voices keep the listener fully immersed. 18mm BLUES

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
