What is the truth about recently orphaned Joey Wilkenson’s strange behavior and the increasing number of gruesomely butchered bodies turning up in Sugarloaf, Idaho? The listener who appreciates a leisurely developed work of psychological terror will be rewarded by John Saul’s methodical tightening of the thumbscrew. David Regal’s serious reading captures the somber mood needed for a work that is less menacing in print. Regal’s vocal changes are very good for this mixture of ages and sexes, and one of his characters is unintentionally hilarious. Technically, the recording level is superior, and the cover of the cassette case is much more enticing than the book jacket.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
