Eliza Foss creates an interesting woman in Catherine Winslow, former investigative journalist turned household hints columnist. Catherine lives alone in Vermont on remote Cloudland Road. After five unsolved murders in the past two-and-a-half years, Catherine discovers a sixth body while on a walk close to home. Even with a meandering, often far-fetched story line, Eliza Foss’s careful performance gives a clear sense of Catherine’s melancholy as she contemplates her past mistakes and her advancing age. (She’s just turned 42.) Catherine ponders her difficult relationship with her daughter and, even with a serial killer on the loose, seriously considers renewing her affair with a man who once strangled her. Foss’s narration makes the wide variety of characters and red herrings the best reason for listening to this audiobook.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
