Narrator Dan John Miller's deep pitch and intense pacing carry listeners through this high-stakes adventure. Carol Evers is a clever woman with an unusual condition--she has died and returned to life many times, each time spending her dying moments in a bizarre realm she calls Howltown. When her husband decides to capitalize on one of her deaths by attempting to bury her alive and steal her fortune, it's up to her first love to rescue her before it's too late. Malerman's prose is rich in intrigue and supernatural elements, and Miller's character portrayals are evocative and bold, leaning heavily into the best and worst parts of each character. Many listeners may think the story needs more of Carol's point of view, but Miller works well with Malerman's material nonetheless.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
