Kymberly Dakin does a fine job of unobtrusively narrating the 23-year history of four young mothers who become friends when living on Grand Avenue in a Cincinnati suburb. She lets the story of each of the women take center stage. Chris, an abused wife; Vicki, a successful lawyer; Barbara, a former beauty queen; and Susan, a student, all have daughters the same age. Starting out as a soap opera-ish women's novel as the four experience abuse, betrayal, and success, the story picks up speed when one is murdered and another defends the prime suspect.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
