The twisted story of an elderly artist and children's book author named Marcus Kidder and his obsession with a 16-year-old nanny named Katya sends shudders down one’s spine as Kidder ensnares the teenager in his attempt to create a "fairy-tale death.” Narrator Angela Goethals captures the girlish tone and wide-eyed naïveté of the attractive Katya as she slowly becomes entrapped by her wealthy suitor. Bestselling literary novelist Joyce Carol Oates finds a willing accomplice in narrator Goethals as Katya is manipulated into posing for the elderly artist in lingerie. Ultimately, the novel is creepy and not as satisfying as one would hope, although Oates’s fans may enjoy it.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
