An obsessed billionaire arranges an expedition in Jordan to unearth the Ark of the Covenant. He takes with him a motley crew of unlikable characters with all sorts of hidden agendas, while the landscape swarms with religious fanatics. Murder abounds. The terrain and the weather don’t help. But narrator Pete Bradbury does. His smooth British voice handles arcane terminology and international accents equally well. When the tension heightens, Bradbury passes it along to the listener. A fast-paced story and a skilled narration make for good listening.

Narrator Rebecca Lowman imbues Kate Riley's parabolic prose with verve and urgency. This ambitious debut unearths universalities of feminine curiosity from within the walls of a strict insular community. Ruth--a relentlessly inquisitive, slightly brainwashed member of a Christian communist cult in rural Michigan--is irresistible. While not overtly rebellious, she is mischievous. Her thoughts and various events within the community construct an effectively plotless but intellectually seductive mosaic of language, which Lowman parses with methodical precision.
