by Judith St. George ; illustrated by David Small ; Read by Christina Moore ‧ RELEASE DATE: April 18, 2006
Where would our world be without hook-and-loop fasteners (Velcro), frozen foods, or rocket fuel? Judith St. George shares stories of the determination, habits, and creativity of a multitude of inventors--male and female, youthful and seasoned. Christina Moore does a outstanding job animating what could sound like a mere listing of inventions. Her voice is dynamic, her timing excellent, and her interest genuine. The best possible scenario would be to listen to Moore while pouring over the book, which features David Small's engaging and humorous illustrations. Young listeners can settle in, prepare to be inspired, and think about what it is that THEY want to create.

by Patricia Williams Dockery ; Read by Nekia Renee Martin ‧ RELEASE DATE: Dec. 9, 2025
Nekia Renee Martin guides listeners through a surprisingly comprehensive account of 19th-century African American resistance. Despite the title, the chronological territory covered ranges well beyond abolition and the Civil War to Reconstruction and the beginnings of Jim Crow. Martin's strong yet musical narration introduces youngsters to such touch points as the slave trade, the Underground Railroad, the Dred Scott decision, Black soldiers in the Union Army, the Freedmen's Bureau, and more. Kids will meet a panoply of notable Black individuals, including journalists, inventors, statesmen, and activists. There's so much information that the audiobook has a hodgepodge feel. Martin's steady cadence helps keep listeners oriented to this serviceable introduction to African American history.
