Judy Blume, author of numerous books for children and young adults and a couple of adult novels, straddles the latter two genres with SUMMER SISTERS. The listener is transported back to the moment two sixth-grade girls meet. Kate Reading can be childlike or sexy, innocent or manipulative, as she realizes their different natures. Her breezy retelling of nearly twenty years in Victoria's and Caitlin's lives as "summer sisters" gives no pause to the book's separation into parts, which can be confusing. Still her rendition of the troubled but true friendship is too juicy to leave until the unexpected ending.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
