Christa Lewis soberly narrates a detailed story on racial struggles in the early '90s. Leslie Marshall returns to Avalon Island with her multiracial family, which stirs up trouble from more conservative locals. Local girl Maddie falls in love with one of the Marshall's sons, and this causes further tension as she tries to hide her budding relationship from her racist father. Although Lewis's narration can be unvaried in tone and choppy in pacing, she should be commended for tackling such a meaty performance involving several serious themes including the social divide, environmental issues, and progressivism. This audiobook is intriguing for those interested in darker fiction.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
