In this enjoyable family story, Glass and Masterson portray a pair of vastly different sisters. As Louisa and Clem tell their story in alternating chapters, their disparities are heightened by the narrators’ interpretations. Glass gives practical, cautious Louisa a no-nonsense voice while free-spirited Clem comes across as the lively, adventurous woman she is. Masterson’s professional experience lends her character the expressive quality that the younger, freewheeling sister embodies. Both narrators delight the listener with humorous depictions of an elderly aunt with a past and the sisters’ mother, ever ready with a cliché to address any situation. The women move through adulthood, sharing as best they can life’s struggles and tragedies and embracing a sisterhood that is uniquely their own.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
