With excellent rhythm and pacing and nuanced character variation, narrator Caroline Hewitt shines in this compelling audiobook inspired by the first female columnists at the New Yorker. Winifred “Freddie” Archer is a nightlife columnist for Gotham magazine in 1920s New York City. Along with her friends, Freddie explores speakeasies, parties, and restaurants to write about the city’s rich and famous. When someone mentioned in her column is murdered, Freddie puts herself in the middle of the investigation, even when she is warned to stay out of it. Hewitt portrays Freddie as smart, curious, fearless, and determined as she works to uncover a killer.

Brian Nishii's performance captures the essence of a Japanese immigrant, newly arrived in southern California in the early 1900s. Ryui establishes his new life in Pasadena only to get swept up into an art theft investigation, all while experiencing anti-Japanese attacks firsthand. Throughout, Nishii embodies fully the main character's struggle to adapt to this new world, learning about the culture and conflict embedded into life as a native Japanese in the social, cultural, and political environment at the turn of the 20th century. Nishii moves effortlessly among the various accents that make up the Los Angeles of the period.
