Rosalyn Landor has much to dramatize in this novel of transitions. Barbara Alderley is 15 when she marries Roger Montgeoffrey, a man 27 years her senior. Landor uses spirited pacing to portray a passionate, innocent Barbara who races into her future. Later, Landor suffuses this portrait with strong emotions as Barbara encounters the realities of her new life. Using a deep voice for the character of Roger, she conveys much more than his masculinity in her portrayal of a man with many secrets. Landor's elegant articulation projects the glamour of both English society and French court life. Listeners will not feel that the abridgment has deprived them.
