Isobel Fairfax lost her mother when she was 5. Really lost her. Walking in the woods one day, Eliza simply disappeared, and much of Isobel's young life has been focused on finding out what happened. Susan Jameson performs this dark British comedy/mystery with a brilliant sense of pace and fun. While many of her characterizations are subtle, every less-than-virtuous female carries the same grating voice. Jameson's finest performance is that of the loving, though abused, Mrs. Baxter, whom she embraces with great compassion and tenderness. The surprise conclusion to the intricate plot leaves the listener shaking her head in wonderment and appreciation.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
