WALK SOFTLY, RACHEL

Fourteen-year-old Rachel knows there’s a dark secret that has been hidden in her family since her brother’s death seven years earlier. Her parents are distant, her best friend has moved away, and a new friend’s fascination with fire makes her uncomfortable. Rachel finds her brother Jake’s journal and begins reading it. From there, the story alternates between Rachel’s current life and her brother’s earlier one. Although Alyssa Bresnahan attempts to alter the pitch of her voice between the two characters, her delivery is so flat that the listener must guess which character is talking until the speaker becomes clear through his/her words.

Narrator Phoebe Strole's expert approach to this contemporary fantasy shines. Winnie is one of the four Farthing sisters who've been told they're descendants of Persephone, the Greek goddess of the dead. While talking to the dead had always been the norm for the sisters, it wasn't until Winnie accidentally banished a resident ghost that she came to believe that she and her sisters could be special. When the underworld attempts to converge with their world, the Farthing girls must rise to the challenge of stopping them. Strole delivers the story with poise and an occasional sprinkle of humor. The dialogue between these four sisters--simple and airy as delivered by Strole--makes the story flow.

      FALL OF THE FIREFLIES

      SEASONS OF SISTERHOOD, BOOK 1

In this YA fantasy audiobook, 15-year-old twins Delia and Velia must rescue their father from a vengeful spirit driven by his desire for power. They must also decide if their destiny is to battle monsters in service to the Aztec gods. Narrator Kyla Garcia expertly handles both quests, as well as the many Mexican beings from folklore. Garcia's pace is breakneck, but listeners can still follow the twins' choices and decisions. The family dynamic involves a new stepfather--someone they're not yet ready to trust. Nonetheless, the twins demonstrate courage as they face both supernatural and family trials. Teens who enjoy fantasy will find much to enjoy in this first installment of the Seasons of Sisterhood trilogy.
