There are two worlds in this imaginative story. Narrator Richard Poe expertly portrays this action-adventure with a message, in which a viral infection threatens the world's population. Heroine Laura Byrd, caught in the blistering cold of Antarctica during a research mission, may be the only person who survives the pandemic. Her struggle against insurmountable odds is both pulse-pounding and heart-breaking. Most interesting is the world of the afterlife, where inhabitants live as long as they are remembered by someone here on Earth. The lyric description as rendered by Poe makes this a book more enjoyable to listen to than to read.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
