Messer also believably "grows" Jo-Jo's voice from toddler to young adult. Laura Horowitz captures Rose's pride in her teaching career and her growing confidence when she finally stands up to her abusive husband. Laci Morgan shines as confused, clueless pregnant teenager Betsy and, later, as confident Dr. Perkins.
