Dick Hill does his level best to adapt his laid-back style to this story of a defunct submarine's final voyage. It's hard to go wrong with Hill as a reader. He's got one of those buttery voices that always makes listening a pleasure. The old warhorse sub, THE MEMPHIS, is forced into service a final time to sneak into Russian waters to measure the extent of radioactive contamination left behind by the military. It's a bit painful to hear how the hero, Jerry Mitchell, is forced to endure incredible amounts of abuse just to do his job. Fortunately, he weathers it all, and things turn out well.

This is not a story about guns, but about blue pearls. Gerald Browne takes us to the Pacific Ocean and the world of pearl divers and natural gems and mixes in mystery, intrigue and suspense. Barry Bostwick portrays the characters in one voice, varying his intonation slightly for the Asian personalities. His reading style is very smooth, evidence of preparation and interest in the story. 18mm Blues is abridged well, collecting the important elements of the story. Unobtrusive music indicates the end of each side. Disappear into the mystery of the Far East and one of its most beautiful commodities.
